Being The Team

By Tom Shay, Profits Plus Solutions, Inc

We have seen the expression, “team” -- as compared to being “employees” -- used so often in the past 30 years to express the idea of the people working in our businesses.

We have the expectation the “team” gets along with each other; the “team” works together to accomplish tasks done vs. one individual doing the work; and, that a “team” can do a better job of serving our customer than an employee can.

All of this makes sense in allowing us to better compete.  Having that personal interaction with our customers should be a great experience that the Internet and competitors cannot match.

It’s common to see the players on a winning team recognize and credit the “team” for their success.  Together they’ve addressed their challenges throughout the season and succeeded.

Just as the sports team gathers around their coach before the game begins, you could use this same strategy in your business each day.  What if your employees were scheduled to arrive just 15 minutes before the store opened? Having a pot of coffee ready makes for a soothing and mood setting environment for the day.  It could also provide you – the coach – with a great opportunity to quickly discuss what needs to be done that day – from following up with a customer to stocking shelves to cleaning the restrooms.  All of the “short term” issues and opportunities.

Requiring every employee to always have a notepad and pen with them to take notes of specific assignments, demonstrate you are always ready to conduct business and will remember what someone said or something they need to do.

Occasionally, you can convey a more specific message such as demonstrating how you want the phone answered or how you prefer to have your staff greet customers who have just walked into the store.  Do they know, for example, that putting an item in the customers hands, and at the appropriate time saying, “Is one enough or would two be better?”, have both been shown to increase sales?
The activities will consume at least 10 minutes and then everyone can start their day, hopefully, with a little stronger sense of “the team.”

The 2018 Artist & Art Materials Study

NAMTA’s 2018, tri-annual Artist and Art Materials Survey represents the fourth in a series of valuable survey data about the Art Materials business and its customers. The Study features the responses of more than 7,000 artists in the USA and Canada, including information on questions regarding artworks created, art materials, content use, social media, spending by product category and retail channel, feedback for retailers, demographics, and returning to art.

The 2018 Artist & Art Materials Study survey data is packaged in three reports, each of which is free to download for NAMTA members. Non-members can contact NAMTA using the contact below to get pricing and other information on how to access this exclusive data.

Tables and Trending
This document contains the survey results and break down the overall data into several categories: U.S. - Canada - Student - Hobbyist - Professional. Though this constitutes the fourth wave of a tracking study, results for 2009 were not segmented in a way so that they could be used for comparisons.  In some instances, question wordings in previous years were similar to but not directly comparable with question wordings for the 2018 study. Where possible the data is compared to the 2015 and 2012 surveys.

Artists & Art Materials Survey Report
Packaged into a PowerPoint presentation, this document does not follow the numerical order of the survey but instead provides insights into some interesting data points from the survey.

Artists & Art Materials Survey Comments
Often, the survey comments provided by respondents can provide information that equals or surpasses in value the actual survey data. The 2018 Artists & Art Materials Survey has more than 20,000 responses and/or comments from 18 questions where respondents were asked to – or could – include additional information. When you download and open this document you will see the “Question Numbers” across the bottom of the spreadsheet. Just click on those tabs to open the response/comment report for that question.  If you elect to print these responses be aware that many of the question responses are 25 to 100 pages long.

Click here to get all three. If you have any questions regarding the information or you have difficulty in downloading the reports please contact Karen Brown at NAMTA – [email protected] or 704-892-6244.

Art In US News on
Schools are beginning to recognize that arts education is not merely a nice addition to the learning experience, but rather an important vehicle for kids to learn skills that can also be applied to their other academic studies. Arts integration has become increasingly popular because educators are finding that when art is meshed with content learning, students are more engaged and interested. However, some schools have used arts integration as an excuse to sideline trained arts teachers, a mistake if the program is truly going to uphold rigorous artistic standards alongside academic ones.
