“Never been to Columbus, Ohio? You will be shocked at what an upscale, clean, and metropolitan city it is. Columbus is my hometown and although I have not lived there in 20 years it is still where my heart is. I have lived in Southern California as well as Phoenix, and have traveled to New York, London, Paris and Hong Kong but within walking distance of the convention center in Columbus you will find restaurants that rival any in those major cities. I can’t wait to see you in the heart of it all.” - Denzil Quick, Spellbinders

When Greg Hyatt recently learned of David Flax’s passing in 2020, he contacted us with this information. Greg recalled 50 years ago his first visit to the NYC stores run by David and his brother Leonard. “I was so impressed by how they had extended their selection of core art supplies into categories like fine writing, photography, presentation, framing, and creative gifts. Their legendary branding and merchandising appealed to all consumers. When I later had opportunities to speak with David, I found him to be the perfect gentleman, always humble in view of his great accomplishments and unmistakable intelligence.”

In May 2020, when we were a couple of months into the pandemic, we were not aware that David Flax had passed away, so at this time we remember Mr. Flax. - Namta

David P. Flax (1933 - 2020) died on May 11, 2020. Born on April 4, 1933, in Bayonne, New Jersey, David was the youngest of three sons born to the late Fanny and Samuel Flax. He attended Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
David served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Maryland and California. He returned to the New York area and spent the entirety of his adult life working at Sam Flax, a retail art supply business founded by his father. David and his brothers expanded the business in Manhattan and opened stores in Atlanta, Orlando and Tampa. David later moved to Orlando and worked at Sam Flax on East Colonial Drive for many years. Leonard Flax (1928 - 2022) Leonard Flax, owner of Sam Flax and Kate’s Paperie, died on April 7, 2022, at the age of 94, still working until his final days. An industry pioneer, his stores were NYC institutions for almost a century under his leadership. Sam Flax, with its iconic bold red serif logo, served artists and the advertising world with tools and materials. It was known for helping young painters, like Jackson Pollock, who offered to pay for supplies with his paintings. Kate’s Paperie was the first store of its kind, a destination for beautiful papers, stationery and eclectic ephemera from around the world. His inventive store displays and merchandising set the aesthetic for the industry and beyond.
Leonard lived his life like he ran his business, committed to innovation, creativity and exploration. Always interested in discovering the unexpected, his favorite section of the paper was the obituaries. In his last hours he said, “I guess it’s the end of the week, we have a lot to get done.” SEE OBITUARY
